Conservative Maldon District Councillor James Burrell-Cook and Landlord of the Queen Victoria Public House, Spital Road, Maldon and Sir John Whittingdale OBE MP for the Maldon constituency
Labour’s war on pubs will close many favourite locals. The Conservatives have begun a nationwide campaign to try and save British pubs. There's an online petition - will you sign?
We have launched the ‘Save the Local’ campaign to support pubs right across Britain, in the wake of Labour’s punishing measures. As you will be aware, local pubs are very important and businesses that need to be supported. We have 87 of them in the Maldon constituency alone.
The egregious measures from the Government include increasing business rates, National Insurance increases and the pub garden smoking ban. Labour are threatening the future of small local pubs everywhere, meaning less jobs, less opportunity for local business and more money out of customers' pockets.
“Labour just don’t get it. Every cost we face has gone up — rent, business rates, wages, suppliers, and energy — yet their answer is to keep taxing businesses. They don’t understand that you can’t invest, grow, or even maintain jobs when you’re being squeezed from every direction. We’re cutting staff just to survive, services are shrinking, growth is disappearing, customers have no money to go to the pub as their costs have increased and all the while we’re still repaying COVID-19 bounce-back loans taken out to keep our pub alive and supporting local communities. We now need an extra £25 per employee, per hour, just to stand still.” - James Burrell-Cook, Landlord of the Queen Victoria Public House in Maldon.
Please do get involved with our campaign, the link to sign the petition is below. Thank you!
